‘Palworld’ has lost two thirds of its players in two weeks | Top Vip News

While this is certainly not a “Palworld is doomed,” it is simply something I think needs to be noted about what will undoubtedly be considered one of the biggest surprise hits of 2024, despite it being so early. in the year.

Palworld managed to reach the second all-time concurrent peak on Steam with 2.1 million players. It’s hugely impressive and puts it ahead of games like Dota 2 and CS:GO. However, things are starting to fall pretty quickly, even though the totals are still high in context.

That peak of 2.1 million was about 15 days ago, and Now we are looking at things more closely. to 750,000, with its peaks falling by about two-thirds during that time period. Again, that is enough to keep it at #2 on Steam right now, only behind CS2, and still making multiples of another new “hit” game like Helldivers 2 with 120-150K.

However, I wonder how things will be for Palworld in the long term. Was it simply a “fad” that will continue to lose players precipitously? Or is it something that will actually have legs and although it may not be a straight Pokémon rival, something that can at least take some big bites out of the seemingly impenetrable franchise.

One thing I think is a problem with this steep and rapid decline is that this isn’t just a single-player game. Its main appeal is that it is a live survival game that you can play on populated multiplayer servers. And even if not, this is a game with long-term goals and tasks, from reaching the maximum level to building extensive bases, completing your Paldeck, and raising and farming powerful friends that can take eons to fully form. But it seems that about 1.4 million players realized what all the fuss was about and quit after a couple of days.

Whatever happens now, Palworld will be considered a huge success. It’s important to note that this is not a free game and all of those players paid between $25 and $30 for their copy. This is hundreds of millions of dollars going to small developer Pocketpair, which is now reportedly drowning a bit trying to keep up with its new scaling needs.

What I’m most curious about is whether this decline continues or stabilizes with a healthy, ongoing, longer-term player population. It would be great to establish even a few hundred thousand regular players. Falling below 100,000 in less than a month would be less so and would indicate that it probably has no legs, despite its undeniable initial success. I’ll keep an eye on it to be sure, either way.
