Part 2′ is the eighth highest rated movie in history on IMDB

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two has many saying it’s one of the best sci-fi films ever, and after watching it, it’s hard to say that’s hyperbole. So far, the numbers seem to bear this out.

While its extremely high viewership on Rotten Tomatoes and critic scores are excellent, the most impressive number is what it’s currently doing on IMDB, where current numbers I have it at a 9.0/10 after 63,000 reviews have already been counted. That’s 52% of all ratings at 10/10.

In the context of IMDB, that’s a pretty surprising number. As things stand, that puts Dune: Part Two in the top 10 of all time. Not just science fiction movies, all movies. It’s actually tied with one group at that 9.0, but those others have many, many more reviews, making the number harder to maintain. So I count it eighth. The list is:

  1. The Shawshank Redemption – 9.3
  2. The Godfather – 9.2
  3. The Dark Knight – 9.0
  4. The Godfather Part 2 – 9.0
  5. 12 Angry Men – 9.0
  6. Schindler’s List – 9.0
  7. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King – 9.0
  8. Dune: Part Two – 9.0
  9. Pulp Fiction – 8.9
  10. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Rings – 8.9

Again, this is likely to decrease over time, as the most avid viewers are likely to have watched first. IMDB also leans a little more towards geek culture. Is The Dark Knight the third best movie ever made? Probably not. But still, the fact that Dune Part Two is where it is is extremely impressive and is being rewarded critically and commercially, looking to double the profits of the first film in many categories.

It stands to reason that we’ll see Villeneuve make Dune: Messiah, which he wants to be the third part of the trilogy, even if the book’s source material is… a little more questionable. But the “holy war” has begun at the end of Dune Part 2, and I have no doubt that now everyone wants to see the conclusion come true. I’ve seen some compare the nearly completed Dune trilogy as something akin to the original Star Wars trilogy as a force of nature. I’m not 100% sure we’re there yet (the first movie didn’t really garner that much devotion), but I can’t rule it out, and yes, it is without a doubt one of the best sci-fi movies. movies ever made, no matter how you want to change the order.

As for the IMDB listing, we’ll see how it performs over time, but even as a starting point it’s extremely impressive and well deserved.
