Part 2’ Reviews Pass Terminator 2, Star Wars, Alien, Blade Runner

Dune: Part 2, arriving later this week, has some of the best reviews we’ve ever seen for a sci-fi movie. Currently at 97% about rotten tomatoes With 148 reviews, there are few other films in history that match that, and it’s a big jump from the original Dune, also from director Denis Villeneuve. which obtained 83%.

It’s downright surprising to see how much that score puts Dune: Part 2 above or tied in the annals of science fiction history. I don’t want to say yes, absolutely. is better than all of these movies or will have as much cultural impact as these classics, but here’s how it stacks up to some of the biggest movies in the history of the genre:

  • Interstellar – 73%
  • Avatar – 82%
  • The matrix – 83%
  • Dune (Villenueve) – 83%
  • Blade Runner 2049 (Villeneuve) – 88%
  • Bounty Hunter – 89%
  • District 9 – 90%
  • Terminator 2 – 91%
  • Robocop – 92%
  • Foreigner – 93%
  • 2001: A Space Odyssey – 92%
  • Back to the future – 93%
  • Star Wars: A New Hope – 93%
  • Arrival (Villeneuve) – 94%
  • Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back – 95%
  • A quiet place – 96%
  • Mad Max: Fury Road – 97%
  • Metropolis – 97%
  • Dune: Part 2 (Villeneuve) – 97%
  • Repository Man – 98%
  • Foreigners – 98%
  • Eastern Time – 99%
  • The Terminator – 100%

I could go on, but you get the idea. No, equating all these scores does not necessarily add up. I mean, The Matrix at 83%? Come on. Or will this movie actually be better than the original Star Wars? Probably not.

However, reviews and trailers for Dune: Part 2 are enthusiastic. Whether it’s exactly where it is here or not, it will be a must-see theatrical experience, not necessarily just for Dune fans, but for all sci-fi fans.

Dune: Part 2 should do well enough for Villeneuve to film Dune Messiah as the third film in the trilogy, although it may be difficult to top Part 2 given what we’ve seen so far. Villeneuve has already established himself as one of the best science fiction directors of all time. As tall as Cameron and Lucas? Maybe not yet, but it’s certainly on the right track.

As for the fate of Dune: Part 2 at the box office, it’s a bigger pre-sale than Blade Runner 2049 and Villeneuve’s Arrival. Reported advance ticket sales are also double the first Dune movie at this point in its preview. Of course, we have to remember that the original Dune was released at the height of the pandemic, which severely reduced potential participation.

All of this is shaping up to make Dune: Part 2 a huge success. I can’t wait to see it with my own eyes in a few days.
