A Wyoming judge accepted the actor’s plea and ordered him to pay a fine of more than $1,500 US dollars (approximately $2,029 Canadian dollars) for the crime, with his payment to go to a nonprofit organization in charge of preserving the park.

Brosnan admitted Thursday that he violated federal regulations prohibiting pedestrian traffic near the Mammoth Terraces hot springs. A second charge accusing him of ignoring closure signs in the area was dropped as part of his plea deal.

Both crimes are classified as “misdemeanors/misdemeanors.”

Federal rules state that visitors to national parks must stay on designated trails and venturing off the boardwalk is punishable by up to six months in jail and a fine of up to $5,000.

Millions of people visit Yellowstone each year and at least 22 people have died from burns caused by the park’s springs and geysers.

A photo of Brosnan in the famous park was posted on an Instagram account mocking Yellowstone’s “tourons”: idiot tourists. It appeared to show the actor wearing sunglasses and a fedora posing next to snowy springs.

At the time of his crime, Brosnan was living in the area while filming a new movie.
