The ninth Portland Winter Festival of Lights kicked off Friday night at Pioneer Courthouse Square with fire-powered erupting performances and interactive light-powered art installations across the city.

The free event features around 170 art installations along with food carts and live music. Some key locations include a 14-foot sculpture at the Salmon Springs Fountain, the Tesseract Cube at the World Trade Center, an LED drag show, the illuminated bike ride, the Little Luminaries Procession, the Flash Mob LED Hula Hoop and the Fun Luv’n. Silent disco.

Although most of the facilities are downtown, near Pioneer Courthouse Square and the World Trade Center buildings, dozens of other locations throughout the city have facilities. They can be found in a person’s front yard, at traffic intersections, in food carts, at Portland International Airport, and even on a goat farm.

Event organizers expect around 200,000 people to participate in the festival.

The Willamette Light Brigade hosts this free show which was founded in 2016. Facilities throughout the city are mapped on pdxwlf.com, but it’s fun to just stumble upon the artwork while exploring Portland. “What Shines Under Pressure,” this year’s theme, “explores resilience and creativity,” organizers say.

Anchor sites are activated from 6 to 10 pm on Fridays and Saturdays. Pop-up locations are open throughout the festival at various times. Check the full schedule here.
