(KRON) — The Alameda County Department of Public Health reported Tuesday that there was a possible measles exposure at a San Leandro restaurant.

The possible exhibition was at Sons of Liberty Alehouse on the night of Saturday, March 9. People who were in the restaurant between 4:45 pm and 7:30 pm may have been exposed to measles.

The health department issued specific guidelines for people who were at the restaurant during this period and met any of the following criteria:

  • A baby 11 months old or younger.
  • Not vaccinated against measles.
  • You are unsure of your measles vaccination status
  • Pregnant
  • Immunocompromised (having a weakened immune system)
  • a health worker
  • A child care provider

Anyone who fits this description should contact their healthcare provider and the Alameda County Public Health Department at (510) 267-3250.

The health department says measles is highly contagious and is spread by direct contact or by airborne transmission when the infected person breathes, coughs or sneezes. Nine out of 10 unvaccinated people who come into contact with an infected person will become infected, the health department said.

Measles symptoms may appear 7 to 21 days after exposure. That time period is March 16 to March 30 in this case.

Symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a rash that can last up to a week. Other complications include diarrhea, middle ear infection, and pneumonia. A less common symptom is encephalitis, which is a brain infection. Among children, 1 or 2 in every 1,000 with measles die from lung or brain complications.

The health department urges anyone with measles symptoms to call the medical facility they plan to go to before they go and report their symptoms. For more information about measles, click HERE.

Sons of Liberty Alehouse is located at 150 West Juana Ave. in San Leandro. The owner told KRON4 that the health department notified him of the possible exposure on Tuesday, but they were unable to provide proof that the infected person was a customer.
