Created by Succession Featuring writer-producer Will Tracy, the limited series follows “a year within the palace walls of a modern European regime that begins to crumble.” Winslet plays Elena Vernham, the chancellor of an imaginary European nation, while Matthias Schoenaerts plays opposite Winslet Corporal Herbert Zubak, a disgraced soldier who becomes her trusted advisor. Guillaume Gallienne, Andrea Riseborough, Martha Plimpton and Hugh Grant also appear in The regime.
“It’s a love story between these two people who have this kind of dreamy vibe, even when they see each other for the first time,” Tracy said. Entertainment Weekly before the premiere of season 1. “It’s a little like Sleeping Beauty. ‘I know you. I once walked with you in a dream. I wanted to maintain that somewhat stylized, dreamy, middle-European fairy tale tone throughout the show. “I’m not sure if that ties into any other piece of pop culture, which probably made it a little harder to describe exactly what the show was.”
Tracy added that he did not write the role of Elena for Winslet, but noted that he would have been “heartbroken” if she had not starred in the lead role.
“As she started to develop the character and the way she looked and sounded and behaved, then I’m writing about that,” he explained. “She [Winslet] “I really thought about how she would dress, what her hair would be like from scene to scene, from moment to moment, depending on who she’s meeting, who she’s talking to, how she wants to be perceived, what message she wants to send,” he continued. “A lot of it of the character is wrapped up in the presentation and the image. Kate was very brilliant preparing for all that.”
Meanwhile, Winslet said IndieWire that he didn’t look to specific figures for inspiration for Elena “because I didn’t think it would be a sensible choice.”
“I was able to lean into these absurd, totally irrational and sometimes reckless sides of this made-up imagined character, and finding ways to play out a lot of those scenes was actually a lot of fun. There was always, always the theatrical element,” he described. “And she couldn’t just be one way or say certain things or scream or scream or be physically and overtly sexual because she had to be that way. “Everything for a reason.”
