India head coach Rahul Dravid’s son Samit Dravid has been in the limelight ever since he started playing age-group cricket. For obvious reasons. To Samit’s credit, the stories surrounding him in recent years owe more to his performance than his association with an Indian cricket legend. This time too the story was quite similar.

Samit Dravid plays a square cut like KL Rahul

Samit caught the attention of cricket fans with a perfectly executed square cut that had shades of KL Rahul. Fan Code, the broadcasters’ official X handler, compared the shot to Samit’s father Rahul Dravid, but closer introspection reveals that the cut looked more like the other Rahul of Indian cricket.

Samit played the shot in a two-day warm-up match between the Karnataka State Cricket Association XI and Lancashire, an English county team, in Bengaluru. Lancashire and Sussex are two English teams currently in Bengaluru conducting their pre-season camp ahead of this year’s County Championship.

It was a short delivery from Lancashire left-arm spinner Josh Boyden. Samit was able to reach the length quickly, transferring his weight to the back of his foot and twisting his wrists on the ball to hit it beyond the point.

Lancashire won the toss and sent KSCA XI. Samit came in to bat at number 5 after KSCA lost their first three wickets for 62. He started cautiously but kept the scoreboard going. Just when it looked like he had his eyes on him, Samit was fooled by a brutal delivery from Jack Morley.

The left bowler’s ball fell towards middle, slightly deviating from the right, but what caused Samit to fall was the bounce. He slapped his gloves and headed towards first slip where Luke Wells took a strong catch. Samit was dismissed for 25 off 45 balls with two boundaries.

KSCA XI’s innings was guided by Smaran Ravi who smashed 111 off 153 balls. He was well supported by Hardik Raj, who hit 67 off 74 balls. KSCA were bowled out for 356 in 83 overs.

Samit has been in good form lately. He had a decent Cooch Behar Trophy, scoring 362 runs in 8 matches at an average of 36. Unlike his father, Samit is more than adept with the ball. In fact, he would qualify as a true all-rounder. His numbers in the Cooch Behar U19 Trophy are the biggest proof. Samit, who plays medium pace, took 16 wickets in 8 matches at an average of 19.
