Tuesday night’s season premiere of the ABC procedural, based on the best-selling novels of the same name by Karin Slaughter, saw Georgia Bureau of Investigation Special Agent Will Trent (Ramón Rodríguez) thrown into a mystery of car bomb that already tragically ended a budding love interest. .
Then, the real bombshell! The key to solving the gripping riddle lies with imprisoned serial killer James Ulster (Greg Germann) who, as we learned in the Season 1 finale, killed Will’s mother. and He could simply be her biological father.

“There are so many unanswered questions for Will Trent, like his father James Ulster?” Rodriguez tells USA TODAY. “We keep peeling that onion, to find out who he is now that has little crumbs of the story of his own life.”
Rodriguez, 44, answers some key burning questions from “Will Trent.”
Question: Will Trent has all those three-piece suits and a vintage Porsche. How does he do it on a police officer’s salary?
Ramon Rodriguez: I had the same question. The suits look good, but they are a little big and not the most elegant. His suits are like his armor. He’s doing well in the GBI, but his shoes are very worn out and we haven’t changed them since season 1. The shoes, which get older every day, are so Will Trent. And that old Porsche, he rebuilt it. He’s a smart guy, he doesn’t buy fancy things.
Will begins to learn Spanish to get closer to Lucy Morales, the mother he never knew. What is it like for you to speak broken Spanish?
I do speak Spanish. So it was very satisfying to undo that and find a way to make it feel like it was a discovery for Will. We love seeing Will in uncomfortable and vulnerable situations. He has a hard time figuring out how to put these words together.
Prison is not the end for Greg Germann’s James Ulster in “Will Trent.” What was it like facing him in prison and how long will his Hannibal Lecter-style informant role last?
Greg gets to be really funny and great in that role. He is so juicy. We wanted to go back and check that out and Greg came in excited. We’ll definitely find ways to include him in this season because he’s missing pieces of the puzzle of Will’s life. Seeing them together, there is great tension. I can’t say where this is going, but we’ll take advantage of it when we can. And Ulster is a lawyer, so who knows how long he’ll stay in prison.
Will loses his bomb squad love interest, Agent Dawson (Susan Kelechi Watson) before their first date in the premiere. Will she ever find a deeper love?
We even discussed that: Is this relationship something that lasts an episode or more? It ended up being just that episode. But that’s something that will haunt him. When something like this happens to you after you feel like you just connected.
Will he finally settle down with Agent Polaski (Erika Christensen), the friend who endured an equally tough upbringing in foster care? The tension is killing me.
Their story is complicated because of what they have been through. They know they can count on each other, no matter what. Love is deep. But getting romantic and intimate might not be the best thing for them. They provoke each other in a way that is not the healthiest. We’re in the middle of it now. Then we’ll see.
We didn’t see Will’s chihuahua Betty at the premiere. Will the star dog from season 1 return?
Betty came into hot water after the success of season 1 and demanded a private jet just for herself and one for her coach. It’s hard to be in that dog’s shadow. No, she’s on the show, for sure. We see a different side of Will with Betty, which is awesome. He didn’t want the dog, but he didn’t want her out there either. Now she has something to take care of at home.
What’s it like playing against Bluebell, the chihuahua who plays Betty?
She lives a really good life. There are no private jets, but we flew her to Atlanta from Florida. She does a few scenes, gets treats, and then leaves. But she is the best. My sister had a chihuahua. She was out of control. The thing wouldn’t shut up, because it was a Chihuahua. But Bluebell is the best behaved dog.
The Internet wants to know if the GBI is real. And what does the GBI think of Will Trent?
It is real. We have GBI consultants who come to the set and participate in the creative conversations. We will never be 100% accurate. And they understand it. But it’s always good to keep your eyes on things. I don’t think they’ve ever been depicted on television or film. So they love it.
