The Hindi film industry went through a bad phase from 2020 to 2022, but made a great comeback in 2023. It all started with YRF’s Pathaan, starring Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone and John Abraham, doing historic business, and then films like Jawan , Gadar 2 and Animal followed the trend.
Actress Rani Mukerji, who is also the wife of filmmaker and YRF president Aditya Chopra, spoke about how the huge success of Pathaan changed everything for YRF.

Speaking at the FICCI Frames event in Mumbai, Rani Mukerji spoke about how the entire Bollywood industry went through a bad phase during the pandemic, but that did not motivate Aditya Chopra, who stood firm in what he believed.
“During the pandemic, Adi (Aditya Chopra) had a couple of big films coming out. They were those commercial clunkers that started in the pre-pandemic era. Unfortunately, when the pandemic began, there was a question mark on every movie. And that was the moment when I watched my husband closely because there was no talk of movie releases. There was a lot of pressure on filmmakers to release all these films on OTT, and many of them were doing so. The biggest movies were released on OTT. And my husband was completely calm and collected.”
Rani explained how Aditya did not succumb to the pressure of releasing films on OTT despite getting big deals and decided to wait for people to return to theaters because his films were made for theatres.
Talking about how Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan changed everything for YRF, he added, “When the films came, they all flopped because the way the audience watched the content changed overnight due to OTT. All of these films failed at the box office and were completely commercially successful because none of them did well. It was like a total depression. People were sad in our company and Adi was convinced that his films would be released in theaters. We thought there would be some divine intervention and he would be rewarded for his conviction to release films in theaters, and it all didn’t work out for us. Then came Pathan. He changed the whole thing in Yash Raj. And it became the highest-grossing film.”
About YRF’s next big movies
After Pathaan, YRF’s Tiger 3 released in Diwali 2023, taking forward the narrative of its spy universe. The next movie to be released is War 2 starring Hrithik Roshan, Jr. NTR and Kiara Advani. After that, films like Tiger vs Pathaan and Pathaan 2 will be released. Alia Bhatt is also headlining an upcoming YRF Spy Universe film along with Sharvari Wagh.
