Rani Mukerji spoke about the change in film audiences that occurred after the pandemic. The actor spoke about witnessing a series of flops under the banner of Yash Raj Films, run by her husband Aditya Chopra, in her recent appearance during the FICCI Frames 2024. Rani said she “welcomes” her husband’s conviction during the difficult time and how the huge success of Pathaan changed the game for them. During the talk, Rani spoke about the change in audience for content and said, “Adi (Aditya Chopra) had these big films waiting to be released, but a pandemic happened and they got stuck. The films had to cover the costs incurred in making them and filmmakers were under tremendous pressure to release them on OTT. I saw my husband calm and serene. He said that we made these films for the public to enjoy, so I will release them in theaters. He was offered a lot of money on OTT, but he took a brave call and decided to wait. When these movies were released, they all flopped! The way audiences viewed pandemic content and posted that changed overnight. “
‘Nothing worked for us until Pathaan happened’
Rani further added that Aditya Chopra stood by his conviction and the tides changed in favor when Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan released in theaters and became a box office hit. “All his films failed at the box office and everyone was depressed because it was a big commercial setback. With the conviction that Adi stayed away, we thought that there would be some divine intervention and that he would be rewarded for his conviction to release films in theaters, but That didn’t happen. Nothing worked for us until Pathaan happened. That film changed everything for Yash Raj films. Bhagwaan jab deta hai chappad faad ke deta hai (When God gives, He gives in abundance)! It just tests your courage. Adi had that courage and I congratulate him.”
Pathaan, starring Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone and John Abraham, crossed $1,000 crore worldwide box office gross. The film released on January 25, 2023 and marked Shah Rukh’s return to the big screen four years after his 2018 film Zero.
Rani was last seen in Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway, for which she won a Filmfare Award for Best Actress (Critics’ Choice).
