Review: Rajinikanth’s Lal Salaam: Boring and disappointing

Kollywood director Aishwarya Rajinikanth’s new film Lal Salaam, which features her father, superstar Rajinikanth, in a special role, along with Vishnu Vishal and Vikrant as the lead leads, releases in theaters today. Read our review to find out what it’s like.

History:

The story of the film is set in the village of Kasumuru. Young Guru (Vishnu Vishal) and Samshuddin (Vikrant) were once close friends until a tragic incident separated them, turning them into bitter rivals. Moideen Bhai (Rajinikanth), a textile businessman from Mumbai, has links with Guru and his village. The plot unfolds smoothly until the villagers of Kasumuru face insults from another village. The subsequent events, the increasing severity of the conflict, Moideen Bhai’s involvement and whether the youths eventually manage to reconcile are elements of the story waiting to unfold on the big screen.

Plus Points:

Vishnu Vishal delivers a performance that ideally suits the demands of the character. The depiction of the village atmosphere and retro aesthetic is skillfully executed.

Vikrant’s performance is adequate and Rajinikanth impresses with his gestures and choice dialogues in the role of Vikrant’s father.

Jeevita Rajasekhar shines with her natural looks and the supporting cast performs adequately.

Bad points:

The plot and its slow screenplay are the glaring problems of Lal Salaam. The message that Aishwarya Rajinikanth intends to convey is not new, as has already been seen in many old films. As a director and screenwriter, Aishwarya could have urged her co-writer Vishnu Rangasamy to infuse more emotions that could have potentially enhanced the overall impact of the film.

The emotional scenes lack impact and the absence of a compelling background score further diminishes their effectiveness.

The unknown cast, along with questionable dubbing choices and disappointing performances, hinder the film’s connection.

Aishwarya Rajinikanth’s direction could have elevated certain scenes, and the inclusion of heroine Ananthika, Kapil Dev and Nirosha adds little value to the narrative.

Technical aspects:

Aishwarya Rajinikanth’s dual role as writer and director falls short of delivering a captivating experience. The thin plot and slow pace, especially in the second half, test the audience’s patience.

While Pravin Baaskar’s editing and Vishnu Rangasamy’s cinematography are satisfactory, AR Rahman’s music fails to leave a lasting impression despite its reputation. Additionally, the film’s long running time diminishes its overall impact.

Verdict:

Overall, Lal Salaam presents a mediocre and disappointing viewing experience, with the average performances of its lead actors being the main positives. The film’s shortcomings, including poor writing, slow pacing, and a disappointing score, outweigh its strengths. Keeping these factors in mind, viewers are advised to look for other entertainment options this weekend as even Rajinikanth’s presence cannot save the film.
