Exactly five years after the release of Yatra, a biographical political drama, its sequel, Yatra 2, hits the big screens today amidst decent expectations. Check out our review to see how it fares.

History:

The story unfolds with AP’s 2009 election campaign following the demise of then Chief Minister Rajashekara Reddy (Mammootty). What happens next in Jagan Mohan Reddy’s (Jiiva) life, his political career and his personal life is what the film is about.

Plus Points:

Mahi V Raghav narrates the story in a very clear way. The way he handles the story and script is impressive.

Jiiva is decent in his role and his gestures in portraying the real-life Jagan are appreciable. He, within the scope he has, delivers satisfactory performance.

Mammootty also gives his best performance. His dialogues during his interactions with the audience are emotional and evoke goosebumps.

Santhosh Narayanan brings the film to life with his magnificent score and songs. You have to thank him for not letting the film down with any boring moments.

Bad points:

The story is written very intelligently. Mahi V Raghav does not focus much on some of the very serious issues that happened in YS Jagan’s life. He could have focused more on political and personal issues to discuss in the film.

Story aside, Mahi V Raghav could have taken more care to make Jiiva play Jagan better. Although Jiiva manages to impersonate Jagan on screen, in some scenes she does not express his emotions well.

The writer-director could have injected some emotional scenes between Jagan and his family and the general audience. Scenes like that would have definitely made Yatra 2 more interesting.

Technical aspects:

Writer-director Mahi V Raghav achieved what he wanted to portray in the film. However, he could have focused on emotional aspects that would add more value to the film.

You need to appreciate the casting director for choosing the right artists for the characters. Santhosh Narayanan’s music is top notch. Shravan Katikaneni’s editing and Madhie’s cinematography are appreciable. The short length is definitely a plus, but the second half seems a little slow due to the script.

Verdict:

Overall, Yatra 2 is an honest attempt to show the developments in YS Jagan’s personal and political life after the death of his father Rajashekara Reddy. Mammootty and Jiiva shine in their roles. Music composer Santhosh Narayanan takes the film to the next level. On the other hand, lack of emotional connect in some intense scenes, a slow-paced second half and some untouched events in YS Jagan’s life are drawbacks. If you are a fan of the respective leader, you will find Yatra 2 as the best biographical political film, but if you watch it as a normal audience, you will come away feeling like you are watching a decent film.
