Haute couture is a celebration of craftsmanship (and improvement) in which the world’s leading fashion houses gather in Paris to compete against each other and show off new designs.
The same goes for the celebrities and socialites in the front row, who also have something to sell: movies, music, reality shows, cosmetics. This week’s season was no exception, as a constellation of stars with some truly eye-catching products descended on the catwalks. Here’s what (and who) was there.
Jennifer Lopez was everywhere.
Whether it’s Schiaparelli in a coat made of 7,000 real rose petals and hammered gold sunglasses with sculpted eyebrows and precious stones as lenses, Valentino dressed in black and diamonds from head to toe or Elie Saab in a dress low-cut olive green with cape. purple and green feathered, J-Lo basked in the spotlight ahead of the release of his new album and its accompanying film next month. (If you haven’t seen the trailer yet, prepare to be baffled.)
There was a ‘Euphoria’ reunion at Schiaparelli.
“Euphoria” was the hit series about high school students that shocked the United States. This week two of its biggest stars, Hunter Schafer and Zendaya, met at the Schiaparelli show. Zendaya also debuted a new hairstyle, baby bangs, which quickly sent the internet into meltdown.
Rihanna fangirled with Natalie Portman in Dior.
They may be two of the most prominent women in the world, but a backstage encounter at the Dior show left them Rihanna and Natalie Portman laughing like giddy new girlfriends in a nightclub bathroom.
“I love you,” Portman told the singer, who responded by giving her a bear hug. He added that he normally isn’t “excited about meeting anyone.”
“Are you kidding me? I’m going to faint. I’m going to faint,” Ms. Portman declared, proving that sometimes you really should know your heroes.
Hollywood awards hopefuls took a turn in the shows.
We may be in the middle of awards season in Los Angeles, but that didn’t stop several highly touted talents from taking a trip to Paris. Ali Wong, who champions specs on the red carpet and who won a Golden Globe for “Beef,” was at Dior. Elizabeth Debicki, who won a Golden Globe for her role in “The Crown,” and Da’vine Joy Randolph, who was nominated for an Oscar for “The Holdovers,” were also in the show. Many celebrities without nominations were also circulating, including Anya Taylor-Joy and Glenn Close. Ms Close also attended Armani Privé alongside Gwyneth Paltrow.
Margaret Qualley opened the Chanel show…
Celebrities often sit on the edge of the runway at fashion week instead of walking on it. But Margaret Qualley was the first model to appear at the Chanel show, wearing an all-white ensemble with a bouclé jacket, tiered skirt, tights, and a ruff around her neck.
…and Kendrick Lamar provided the music.
Ms. Qualley also starred in “The Button,” a short film designed as a backdrop for the Chanel show with new music by Kendrick Lamar. Lamar’s creative partner Dave Free directed the three-minute clip which also stars Naomi Campbell. Lamar, who hasn’t released new solo music since 2022, sat down with Campbell and Free for the show.
Kylie Jenner arrived at Valentino with her mini-me.
The robot baby on the Schiaparelli runway may have sparked a debate about whether children are acceptable accessories for fashion week, but Kylie Jenner isn’t paying attention to the masses. Jenner brought her 5-year-old daughter Stormi to the Valentino show, where the mother-daughter duo wore black feather suits and matching sunglasses.
Kris Jenner was there too.
Whenever one of her daughters is in Europe for a fashion week, Kardashian’s “mom-in-chief” is sure to follow along. Kris Jenner was at the Valentino show with her longtime boyfriend, Corey Gamble.
And also Rosie Huntington-Whiteley!
The British supermodel and lingerie and skincare mogul (her lingerie collaboration with Marks & Spencer is a bestseller in Britain) attended Valentino, boldly baring the January elements with a bare midriff and a sequined fishtail skirt.
Noah Cyrus came to see Simone Rocha.
Simone Rocha is the latest guest designer to create a haute couture collection with Jean Paul Gaultier’s atelier. Kylie Jenner (see above) and Bella Thorne were guests, as was Noah Cyrus, wearing a scarlet silk dress with sheer pink layers that showed off her growing collection of arm tattoos.
Er, Kelly Rutherford was everywhere.
Kelly Rutherford may be best known for playing Serena van der Woodsen’s mother on “Gossip Girl,” which ended 12 years ago. But when there is a will to be an enduring matriarch of quiet luxury, there is a way. And Mrs. Rutherford, who has a very stylish instagram accountShe was probably the actress with the busiest schedule during haute couture week. There she was in Dior, a vision of old-school glamor in a skirt suit and pretty in pink silk in Simone Rocha for Gaultier. She also seemed to take glamorous selfies in the elevator every time she left her hotel.
