Indian batsman Rishabh Pant has made a surprising recovery, having started playing cricket in full swing, for the first time since his accident in December 2022. Although international cricket still seems a bit far away for Pant, the Indian batsman is all set to play for the Delhi Capitals in the upcoming 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. While Pant may not keep wickets for Delhi, he is likely to play as a pure batsman. Franchise co-owner Parth Jindal confirmed Pant’s role for this season and said the young star will lead the DC franchise from the first match.
Keeping wickets seems to be the only obstacle for Pant at the moment as the 26-year-old is not fit enough to keep wickets for 20 overs and bat too. Therefore, the team plans to use him only as a pure hitter this season. But there are no plans to make David Warner captain for another season.
“Rishabh is batting. He is running. He has started keeping wicket. He is likely to be in top form for the IPL. I expect Rishabh to play the IPL and he will lead from the first match. The first seven games, we are going to play against him. only as a batsman, and depending on how his body reacts, we will take a call for the rest of the IPL,” Jindal said while speaking to ESPN Cricinfo.
There were also concerns over the fitness of South African pacer Anrich Nortje, but Jindal said he too will be able to take part in the opening match.
“He is fit. Right now, he is bowing at 80% intensity. Next week he will play at 100%. He is going to return to the IPL. He will join our camp and should be ready for our first match,” Jindal added. .
Jindal also praised England star Harry Brook, believing in his ability to play at number 6. Jindal was also delighted to see Mitchell Marsh, another Delhi Capitals star, take on the role of Australia’s T20I captain.
“We feel very confident, the balance of the team is much better with Rishabh’s return. We have a very good team and a lot of options with players like Tristan Stubbs, who had a phenomenal SA20 (with 2024 SA20 champions Sunrisers Eastern).
