Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva has been suspended from the sport until 2025 after she was found to have committed an anti-doping rule violation, according to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. he said Monday. Valieva, who with the Russian Olympic Committee won gold in the team event at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, will be stripped of all awards she has won since the end of 2021.

Valieva tested positive for a banned drugtrimetazidine, but the court ruled that he could still compete at the Beijing Games while investigating, which he said would take months.

At the time, the court said it decided to allow Valieva, who was just 15 at the time, to compete because she was a minor and had to follow different rules than an adult athlete.

The International Olympic Committee, however, said that if he managed to qualify in the competition, there would be no podium ceremony to present the medals.

The United States, which originally took silver in the event and Japan won bronze, will take gold, nearly two years into the competition.

In a statement following news of Valieva’s suspension, the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee said the decision had been “anxiously awaited for two years.”

The court handed down a four-year suspension for Valieva, starting in December 2021, which was when she underwent drug testing. At the time, Valieva claimed that the medication was her grandfather’s and that she accidentally took it after a mix-up.

But the court said Monday that after an investigation, Valieva could not prove that she did not take the medication intentionally.

As part of the four-year ban, all of Valieva’s competitive results from December 25, 2021 onwards will be disqualified and she will lose titles, prizes, medals, winnings, awards and appearance money.
