LOUDONVILLE, New York (NEWS10) — Nothing stopped the Siena women’s lacrosse team on a record-breaking day at Hickey Field Saturday afternoon.
Not the rain; not the sleet; not the snow. And certainly not MAAC newcomer Rider, as the Saints turned in a masterful performance in a 22-4 blowout to set a program record for the largest margin of victory in the team’s 28-year history.
The previous largest margin of victory had been 17 goals on two occasions. Sarah Irish’s goal with three seconds left increased the lead to 18 to ensure a new record was set.
He also tied a program record for most goals scored in a single game with 22 when he scored that total against Hartford on March 13, 2019.
Siena (6-3, 1-0 MAAC) dominated in nearly every facet of the game, gripping the tie controls with an iron fist by winning 26 of 30 as a team.
Individually, senior Taryn Asselin set a new single-game program record for most draw controls in a game with 15.
Asselin had tied the mark earlier this season in a win against Le Moyne on March 2 and flirted with the record when he also scored 12 in a win against then-No. 18 Army West Point on Feb. 17.
Although they were only in their first season playing women’s lacrosse, the Broncs (6-3, 0-1) had gotten off to a good start to the season and featured the MAAC’s top player in draw controls and one of its top scorers in Katie Walsh .
Walsh had entered with an average of 3.13 goals per game and over seven draw controls, but was limited to just two draw controls and one goal against the Saints.
Offensively, junior Grace Dobrzynski led the Saints with an eight-point afternoon (two goals and six assists), while junior Kelly Logue surpassed 100 career points with a six-point day (three goals and three assists). . ).
Siena led 7-1 at the end of the first quarter, receiving two goals each from freshman Olivia Nicholson and senior Rebecca Gilhooley.
The Saints kept their foot on the gas, outscoring the Broncs 6-2 in the second quarter to take a 13-3 lead into halftime.
Siena remained relentless in the second half, outscoring the Broncs 9-1 the rest of the game.
Twelve different Saints contributed to the points column, including a trio who had hat tricks (Logue, Nicholson and Gilhooley).
On defense, graduate student Jenna Colabufo had a team-high four caused turnovers and reached 50 for her Saints career.
Rider, who averaged nearly 15 goals per game and ranked second in the MAAC, was only able to take nine shots, including just six on goal.
Siena earned its fourth straight win and fifth time in its last six outings, holding its opponent to single-digit scoring in all five wins.
