Shankar Mahadevan has returned to India, overjoyed after winning a Grammy. His fusion band Shakti, which also features tabla maestro Ustad Zakir Hussain, won Best Global Music Album at the 2024 Grammys.
When asked about a special moment with the legendary tabla player, he took a moment to choose the right words and said: “The last word in rhythm, according to me, is Ustad Zakir Hussain. There’s no one like him. There is no one who can be like him. He is a guru. He is a mentor. He stood by my side as a friend, philosopher and guide. He has guided me in all aspects. “Not only did I learn music from him, but I also learned many other things.”
Mahadevan, considered one of the best musicians in the country at the moment, reflected on the band’s long journey. He mentioned that, before joining the band, he listened to her and learned from her for 20 years.
“This is a very special moment for me and my band members… for me it’s a dream come true… After touring for 25 years we got this Grammy,” ANI quoted him as saying.

Mahadevan earlier took to Instagram to share his photo with the prestigious award. She wrote: “WE DID IT. I never imagined that a band that I learned my music and my musical aesthetic from would be the band that I would eventually perform with and win a Grammy. This is the time when I can easily say that dreams come true. Shakti was a dream come true! Thank you Almighty for making this happen! It is truly “THIS MOMENT.”
