Seth Meyers has analyzed countless culture wars in his decade behind the Late at night desk, but says the one conservatives are currently waging against Taylor Swift is “easily the most deranged.”
“The conservative movement is so rotten and intellectually bankrupt that they have found themselves in a place where they are somehow enraged that a popular singer is dating a football player,” Meyers said Wednesday, before sharing a flurry of clips from various Fox News hosts criticizing the “All Too Well” singer.
While most online seemed terrified at the prospect of Swift voicing her support for Joe Biden over Donald Trump, Jesse Watters went full Regina George, claiming that Swift’s romance with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce “has all the true love of an arranged marriage” and that their relationship was “probably cooked up in a lab.”
“Let me quote a Taylor Swift lyric when I say, you guys are crazy,” Meyers replied, before clarifying that this was “(Seth’s version)” of a Swift lyric.
“Also, she is dating a guy named travis”, noted Meyers very excited. “How can you get mad over a Taylor and a Travis? “I don’t even know who you Republicans are anymore.”
For Meyers: “Seriously, this is such an innocent, all-American thing: They kiss on the field after he wins the big game and she celebrates with her mom and dances along with the fans. How can you be angry about that?
What really seems to baffle Meyers, though, is how angry Republicans are about how much influence Swift could have in the 2024 presidential election, even though, again, she hasn’t said anything about it.
However, Republicans “have somehow become involved in an elaborate conspiracy theory in which mysterious forces are manufacturing their fame to gain their support for Joe Biden,” Meyers said. “Because only a huge conspiracy would explain why I might prefer Joe Biden to a man who behaves worse every day than any man in a Taylor Swift song, which is saying a lot!
Meyers is also very amused by the claim that Swift’s popularity has been “fabricated.” Because she believes it would be impossible to “magically manufacture that kind of popularity; Otherwise, Joe Biden would be on stage at SoFi Stadium in front of 70,000 people telling a long story about Amtrak while he wore a bedazzled leotard.”
Meyers saved most of her ire for Brian Kilmeade, who blabbed about how Swift endorsing Biden would be “the dumbest thing a mega-superstar could ever do” and warned her to “stay out of it.” His comment led Meyers to ask the million-dollar question: “Whose instincts do we think are sharper?” The 12-time Grammy Award-winning artist who has sold more than 200 million records, hosted the highest-grossing concert series of all time, produced and distributed her own record-breaking concert film and was TIMEPerson of the year either The idiot whose main talent is staring into the camera every morning like a sock with button eyes?
