Former South Africa pacer Shabnim Ismail on Tuesday broke the record for the fastest ball bowled in women’s cricket when she hit one at 132.1 km/h while playing a WPL 2024 match for Mumbai Indians against the Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitely Stadium in New Delhi.
Shabnim Ismail’s delivery, the first by a cricketer to cross the 130 kmph barrier, was the second ball of the third over of the match that hit DC captain Meg Lanning on the pads. MI filed an appeal but the referee rejected it.
The former South African quick, who also held the record for the previous fastest ball (128 kph against the West Indies in 2016 and 127 kph) twice during the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2022, retired after last year’s T20 World Cup. .
However, Ismail did not have the best outings as he was hit for 46 runs, including Shafali Verma for three consecutive sixes in his third over. When asked if he was aware of the record, Ismail said that he actually “doesn’t look at the big screen when he bowls”.

Lanning and Jemimah Rodrigues smashed fifties as DC edged out defending champions MI by 29 runs in a top-of-the-table clash.
