Shane Gillis is struggling to make jokes in a promo for his Saturday night live debut as host.

The comedian will host the next episode of the NBC comedy show alongside musical guest 21 Savage.

In the video posted Wednesday, Gillis tries out some of his jokes for his monologue. SNL cast members Marcello Hernandez and Sarah Sherman, but they’re not landing very well.

“I once went to an Amish wedding. I was the only one there who could do the electric slide,” she says, eliciting an awkward laugh from Hernandez and Sherman.

Gillis continues: “New Planet of the Apes It’s coming out. They will be bananas.”

He then mocked the idea of working with the audience by asking audience members, “Are you guys dating? Are you seeing each other? Hernandez and Sherman jokingly joined him and said, “Yes!”

“God, it must be nice,” Gillis says, followed by an awkward pause. “I’ve been alone for a while.”

He concludes his jokes by saying, “Who likes impressions? And the crowd will say: ‘Yes!’ And then I said, “You ever see a horse and it’s like… (cue horse print).”

After telling SNL cast members: “That’s it. I’m almost done with that monologue,” Hernández responds in a questionable tone, “Great… I think it’s there.”

In other SNL Promo released on Friday, Gillis stands alongside 21 Savage and Kenan Thompson while promoting the upcoming show. In one clip, the comedian wears matching black sunglasses with the rapper.

“Shall we talk about sunglasses?” Thompson asks as Gillis responds, “I don’t know what you’re talking about. These are great.”

Thompson continues: “Are you trying to be like 21 Savage?” but Gillis claims she is not. The rapper proceeds to build confidence in the comedian, telling him, “I think you look good.”

Gillis’ turn as host comes years after he was fired from SNL in 2019, shortly after being cast on the comedy show, when racial and homophobic slurs he used on a podcast resurfaced.
