The 2024 Film Independent Spirit Awards kicked off Sunday on the beach in Santa Monica, celebrating the year’s best in independent film and television as film awards season reaches its peak.

Aidy Bryant will host this year and preside over a ceremony that will crown the marquee winner for Best Picture that will come from five nominees: A24’s. Cord Jefferson has already achieved a victory by American fictiontaking home the award for Best Screenplay, while Samy Burch and Alex Mechanik won the award for Best Primary Screenplay for May December.
Also today, Oscar nominees Da’Vine Joy Randolph of The remains won a Spirit for the gender-neutral category of Best Supporting Performance, Anatomy of a fall won Best International Film and four daughters won Best Documentary.
The last of us has won twice so far on television, for the performances of Nick Offerman and Keivonn Montreal Woodard.
Last year, remember that another photo of A24, Everything everywhere and at the same timestormed onto the beach and scooped seven Spirit Awards, including Best Picture, on its way to the Best Picture Oscar crown.
This year, it is Past lives, May December and American fiction which arrive with five nominations each, with Celine Song’s romantic drama and Cord Jefferson’s stinging satire in the equivalent category at the 2024 Oscars that will take place on March 10.

In today’s Spirit TV races, the Best New Scripted Series category (won last year by Bear) characteristics Beef, Dreaming while black, I’m a Virgo, Jury duty and Slide. Netflix Beef has dominated the awards circuit to this day, including acting awards for its stars Ali Wong and Steven Yeun on Saturday night at the SAG Awards.
Wong ended up winning today in that category, for Best Lead Performance in a New Scripted Series.
The main film acting career includes Jessica Chastain, Greta Lee, Trace Lysette, Natalie Portman, Judy Reyes, Franz Rogowski, Andrew Scott, Teyana Taylor, Jeffrey Wright and Teo Yoo.
