Stanley Government Hospital celebrated World Kidney Day by congratulating kidney transplant patients who are leading healthy lives for more than 15 years after transplant.

The Nephrology Service has performed 949 kidney transplants since its inception, of which 794 have received a kidney from a living related donor and 155 from a deceased donor. Each month, the department performs 2,000 hemodialysis procedures and screens people for risk factors for kidney failure. Chennai North MP Kalanidhi Veerasamy and Muthu Jayaram, founder and former head of the hospital’s Nephrology Department, participated.

Glaucoma Awareness Week

The hospital is also celebrating World Glaucoma Awareness Week from March 10 to 16 to highlight the importance of early diagnosis and treatment of the condition.

Dr Kalanidhi inaugurated a glaucoma screening program and distributed certificates to medical students and paramedics who participated in various competitions. There was a continuing medical education program and pamphlets were distributed emphasizing the importance of regular eye exams and the need to maintain blood sugar and blood pressure.

More than 1,000 people are screened for glaucoma in hospital each month. The MP also donated high-end medical equipment worth Rs 5 million to the hospital in his constituency and from corporate social responsibility funds. Senior officials of the hospital including Dean P. Balaji participated in the programme.
