The Acolyte, a Star Wars show dubbed “Frozen Meets Kill Bill” by showrunner Leslye Headland, has received its first trailer ahead of its long-awaited premiere on Disney+.

The nearly two-minute trailer, below, begins with scenes reminiscent of the Star Wars prequel trilogy as we see the Jedi Temple on Coruscant, although even before the days of Episode 1: The Phantom Menace. The trailer, which takes place during The High Republic, an era set between 100 and 200 years before the prequels until now only explored in novels and comics, shows the training of the Jedi in their bright white robes representative of this era.

However, it then cuts to scenes more akin to the Original Trilogy, as we see what is now a Star Wars mainstay: the cantina. However, Headland’s remake of Star Wars arrives shortly after, as we see the amazing action inspired by director Akira Kurosawa and martial arts films.

Other scenes show several Jedi on screen at once, wielding the also iconic yellow lightsabers of this era, and the premise of The Acolyte is revealed: someone is hunting Jedi. However, the show doesn’t take a traditional route here, as Headland has made it clear that it is told from the perspective of “the bad guys,” i.e. the Sith.

This dynamic is exemplified towards the end of the trailer, where Jodie Turner-Smith’s character says the line: “It’s not about good or bad, it’s about power and who can use it.”

The Acolyte was announced in 2020, but no further details emerged for a while. Amandla Stenberg was announced as the lead in 2022, and Squid Game star Lee Jung-Jae was confirmed as the lead character shortly after.
