“Steve Jobs had natural talent. It was always fun to watch him rehearse because part of his genius was that when he finally did it, he made it look like he was thinking it right there. I will never reach that level,” the businessman-turned-philanthropist said in a podcast.

In their book ‘Becoming Steve Jobs,’ Brent Schlender and Rick Tetzeli wrote that the then-Apple CEO meticulously prepared his keynote presentations, sometimes months before the event.

Schlender wrote that he once spent an entire day watching Jobs perform multiple rehearsals of a single presentation. He changed everything from the color and angle of certain spotlights, and rearranged the order of the Keynote presentation slides to improve its pacing.

Schlender recalled one instance in which Jobs sat quietly on stage with his chin in his hand and stared at the floor for nearly 15 minutes frustrated by an incorrect lighting cue.

During the podcast, Bill Gates said that the task he and Jobs did on stage representing Microsoft and Apple respectively, was to persuade people and companies to believe (and accept) the impact that things like email and spreadsheets they could have in their lives. .

Gates called it evangelism, adding that some people might not like that he stole a religious term, but telling the story of software magic was the bulk of his job.

“A big part of the job I had at Microsoft and the job I have now is to explain what we’re doing in a hopefully direct way that connects with a particular audience,” he added.
