It is no coincidence that the decision was made just weeks after the playoff game between the Bills and Chiefs.
“In the game against Buffalo this year, it was the best 20 or 30 minutes of football I’ve ever seen,” Atlanta Falcons president Rich McKay, chairman of the competition committee, said at league meetings. “To think that it ended that way definitely made me think, ‘Hey, is that equitable? Does that work for everyone?’ “I have no doubt that started the discussion.”
Between 2010 and 2022, 12 playoff games went to overtime, and seven of them were decided on the opening possession of overtime.
“We always listen to the fans, that’s the important thing,” league commissioner Roger Goodell said at the meetings. “We’re always looking to improve and I think what really drove the decision was the database, ultimately, and the analysis of the facts and what happened.”
