Hyderabad: Researchers at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Hyderabad have generated ultrafast electrons with tabletop laser systems that will enable scientists to gain a deeper understanding of the fundamental properties of matter. “We have devised a different mechanism to generate a large number of electrons. Instead of expensive lasers, which are only available in huge national facilities and cost millions of dollars, we achieve this by using a simple laser like the millijoule class laser, which is available in many universities or institutes,” said M. Krishnamurthy, professor of TIFR. With this solution, even a small facility can generate megaelectronvolt (MeV) energies or high-energy electron beams in picoseconds using low-power lasers, the institute said. Applications of this can range from non-destructive testing, imaging, tomography and microscopy. and can influence everything from material science to biological sciences. “This will make diagnoses more accurate and allow ultra-fast photography. Furthermore, it can also revolutionize laser-based medical treatments,” said Professor Krsihnamurthy.
