“I am proud to begin building our first facility outside Sweden for Carl-Gustaf, a product that has a long history in the Indian Armed Forces. We look forward to starting production of our excellent product, now designed and manufactured in India,” said Görgen Johansson, Senior Vice President and Head of the Dynamics business area at Saab.

“Today is an important milestone for Sweden and India. The Saab factory will be the first wholly foreign-owned defense production facility in India. It is a testament to the strong bilateral relationship between our countries,” said Håkan Jevrell, Swedish State Secretary for Foreign Trade.

Saab will partner with Indian suppliers and fully comply with ‘Make in India’ requirements for systems manufactured at the facility, the press release notes. At the new factory, Saab will deploy complex technologies including the latest observation technology and advanced carbon fiber winding to manufacture the Carl-Gustaf M4 for the Indian armed forces, and components that can be included in other users’ systems, he added.

The Carl-Gustaf system has been in service with the Indian Army since 1976 and is established as the primary shoulder-launched weapon in the Indian Armed Forces.

Partnering with Reliance MET City to set up our manufacturing facility in India underlines our strong commitment to the Make in India initiative and our close collaboration with the Indian Defense Forces,” said Mats Palmberg, President and CEO, Saab India Technologies.
