Researchers at the Tata Institute in Mumbai announced the development of a new drug aimed at preventing cancer recurrence, according to a report in Hindustan Times. Researchers and doctors at the institute worked for 10 years and have now created a tablet that they claim would stop cancer from appearing in patients for the second time.

The tablet is priced at $100 per piece, depending on Business standard.

“We did a small experiment where we took human breast cancer cells and implanted them into immunodeficient mice,” said Dr. Indraneel Mittra, the oncosurgeon-turned-scientist who led TMH doctors in the study, as quoted by Hindustan Times. “In six weeks a small tumor formed. We divided the mice into three categories based on cancer treatment: chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery. “We found that all three treatments increased chromatin in the mouse brain.”

“We found that a combination of resveratrol and copper helped destroy chromatin. “We used the combination orally in our studies and found that it prevented metastasis,” said Dr. Mittra, adding that while this was the result of the experiment in mice, the team would now do tests in humans, according to the H.T. report. Dr. Mittra joined TMH in 1982 as the country’s first “surgeon-scientist.”

Mittra further explained that after confirming the presence of chromatin particles after cancer treatment, the team’s focus was on reducing treatment-related toxicity (side effects) in various human cancers, such as stomach, brain, oral and blood through clinical trials, such as Hindustan Times report.
