Following the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) decision to suspend the license of a McDonald’s outlet in Ahmednagar, food safety officials in Telangana will also carry out checks at the chain’s outlets across the state.

The Maharashtra FDA cracked down on the American fast food giant alleging that it used cheese substitutes designed to replicate the taste and texture of dairy cheese without proper disclosure, misleading consumers into thinking they were consuming real cheese.

“Quality checks will be carried out in all multinational food companies in the state during the first week of March. We will check the quality not only of the cheese, but also of the cooking oil, bread and other raw materials they use,” said a senior official of the Food Safety department.

So far, the department has not received any complaints about the quality of the cheese, the official said. “In case of any complaint in this regard, immediate checks will be carried out and action will be taken,” the official added.

The Confederation of Indian Traders (CAIT) has demanded a thorough investigation into the fast food giant’s products to assess the extent of the problem; Until this is done, McDonald’s business operations must be suspended nationwide.

“It is imperative to stop McDonald’s activities across the country as there is a possibility of similar counterfeit raw materials being used elsewhere, posing a risk to public health,” CAIT Secretary General Praveen Khandelwal said. .

Meanwhile, McDonald’s took to X (formerly Twitter) and said it uses “only real, quality cheese” and is actively cooperating with authorities.
