The boy was immediately taken to a hospital and is in serious but stable condition. He was flown from the hospital to Maryland for continued care on January 17.

The boy headed to the floor of the tank with the companion while also wearing a large white helmet and a heavy oxygen tank.

Two reef sharks began swimming aggressively around him, before one of them impaled his legs.

The outlet reported that this caused the young man to lose his balance and straddle the shark, which retaliated by sinking its teeth into his leg.

Other images also emerged showing staff and a woman standing in a corner of the tank while a man can be heard screaming when the incident occurred.

The boy is then seen being picked up by staff out of the water while the woman recording the video is heard saying: “He bit him, a shark bit him, mom.”

A woman is also heard crying hysterically and moaning in the background as another man calls for help.

In a statement, organizers said: “We have launched a thorough internal investigation and are cooperating fully with the authorities.”

“Incidents like this involving interactions with marine life, including the shark species included in this experience, are rare and never acceptable.”
