'Alarming, terrible': Satya Nadella on Taylor Swift deepfake images

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella on Monday expressed concern about the recent rise in sexually explicit videos and images of celebrities generated by artificial intelligence, calling the trend “alarming and terrible.”

In an interview with NBC News, the CEO was asked about fake pornographic images of American pop sensation Taylor Swift that went viral on social media.

Nadella highlighted the need for a rapid response to these types of incidents. “I think it’s incumbent on us to act quickly on this,” she said, adding that “guardrails” are needed to ensure only safe content is produced online.

“I would say two things: One, I go back to what I think is our responsibility, which is all the barriers that we need to put around technology so that more safe content is produced. And there is a lot to do and a lot to do there. But it is a global and social issue; you know, I’ll say, of convergence on certain norms. And we can do it, especially when we have the law, law enforcement, and technology platforms that can come together. “I think we can govern much more than we think, so we give ourselves credit,” says a report in The edge quoted him saying.

The report also claimed that the images could possibly have been generated using Microsoft Designer’s image generator.

Social media was flooded Thursday with fake images showing the 34-year-old singer-songwriter in sexually suggestive poses and clothing, sparking widespread outrage.

Swift was reportedly “furious” after the fake nude images circulated and will likely consider taking legal action against the site responsible for creating the photos.

The photos were also shared on X, formerly Twitter, prompting the company to remove the content from its platform. Subsequently, searches for the singer’s name in X generated an error message.

“Our teams are actively removing all identified images and taking appropriate action against the accounts responsible for posting them. “We are closely monitoring the situation to ensure that any additional violations are addressed immediately and the content is removed,” the company said in a post.
