The red carpet at Hollywood’s Dolby Theater sparkled on Sunday as stars arrived at the Oscars in a flurry of sequins, sparkles and eye-catching metallic dresses.

Lupita Nyong’o’s Armani Privé dress, Gabrielle Union’s stunning Carolina Herrera gown and Michelle Yeoh’s custom Balenciaga dress were among the stunning looks on display during an elegant, if somewhat unadventurous, evening of fashion on the carpet red. (In fact, a good number of attendees opted for monochromatic ensembles in black, white, or black and white.)

Elsewhere, “Barbie” actress America Ferrera gave the metallic trend a pop of color with a pink Atelier Versace chainmail design, while her co-star Margot Robbie took a rare break from Barbie pink in an equally sparkly black Versace dress. Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande also opted to dress color-coded, with the former’s emerald green leather Louis Vuitton dress and the latter’s custom pink quilted Giambattista Valli dress referencing their roles in the upcoming film adaptation of ” “Wicked.”

Michelle Yeoh stunned in a custom Balenciaga dress and elegant black opera gloves.

This awards season has delivered plenty of florals, slits and sheer dresses, but the Oscars heralded a whole new theme: mermaid elegance.

Sunday’s red carpet was awash with dresses imitating scallops and shells, from Anya Taylor-Joy’s Christian Dior Haute Couture dress, inspired by Botticelli’s “The Birth of Venus,” to the Best Actress nominee’s custom Balenciaga look. Carey Mulligan in an elegant mermaid skirt. Elsewhere, Emma Stone wowed in a custom shell-inspired Louis Vuitton dress with a flared peplum waist, and Hailee Steinfeld looked ethereal in a seafoam green Elie Saab Couture design.

The evening’s menswear was relatively minimal, on what is typically the most formal red carpet in Hollywood (although that didn’t stop Simu Liu and “Young Royals” star Omar Rudberg from appearing shirtless). Even actors known for their colorful suits like Colman Domingo and Ryan Gosling, who came to Louis Vuitton and Gucci, respectively, stuck to a mostly black palette, although many accessorized with brooches, bracelets and pins. Gosling, however, made the switch to a hot pink number for his Best Original Song-nominated performance of “I’m Just Ken” during the ceremony.

Meanwhile, Ramy Youssef, Mark Ruffalo, Mahershala Ali and Finneas used their lapels to call for a ceasefire in the war between Israel and Hamas. They were joined by a handful of attendees, including Billie Eilish, Ava DuVernay and Quannah Chasinghorse, who wore red pins as part of the Artists4Ceasefire campaign.
