The Game of Thrones prequel returns

“House of the Dragon” soars again as HBO released two unique trailers for the second season of the “Game of Thrones” prequel.

The series follows the heyday of the Targaryen dynasty 200 years before the events of “Game of Thrones” on the fictional continent of Westeros. Season 2 of the series will officially mark the start of the Dance of Dragons, the Targaryen civil war.

The fantasy drama series is based on the book “Fire & Blood” by author George RR Martin, which details the history of House Targaryen. Season 1 followed Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) as she fights to be named King Viserys I’s (Patty Considine) chosen heir and the lead-up to the War of Succession between the Targaryens.

Season 1, Episode 1 drew nearly 10 million viewers, the biggest premiere for an HBO series in history. The 10-episode first season of “House of the Dragon” aired from August 21 to October 23, 2022. In November, HBO CEO Casey Bloys confirmed that season 2 of the series would premiere “ early summer” of 2024.

Several new faces in the series include Tom Taylor as Lord Cregan Stark, Clinton Liberty as Addam of Hull, Jamie Kenna as Ser Alfred Broome, Kieran Bew as Hugh Hammer, Tom Bennett as Ulf and Vincent Regan as Ser Rickard Thorne. Other newcomers include Abubakar Salim as Alyn of Hull, Gayle Rankin as Alys Rivers, Freddie Fox as Ser Gwayne Hightower and Simon Russell Beale as Ser Simon Strong.

Returning cast includes Emma D’Arcy, Olivia Cooke, Matt Smith, Ewan Mitchell, Eve Best, Steve Toussaint, Fabien Frankel, Tom Glynn-Carney, Sonoya Mizuno, Rhys Ifans, Harry Collett, Phoebe Campbell, Bethany Antonia, Phia Saban, Jefferson Hall, and Matthew Needham.

Martin is the co-creator and executive producer. Ryan Condal is co-creator, showrunner and executive producer. Sara Hess, Alan Taylor, Melissa Bernstein, Kevin de la Noy, Loni Peristere and Vince Gerardis are executive producers.
