West Indies batsman Alzarri Joseph survived despite being dismissed in a bizarre incident during the second T20I match against Australia in Adelaide on Sunday. During the West Indies’ 19th innings, Joseph attempted a quick single, but Mitchell Marsh’s delivery was extremely fast and bowler Spencer Johnson dislodged the bails with the batsman close to the crease. However, the batsman was not given because none of the Australian players, including the bowler, requested it. Marsh began celebrating after the replay was shown on the big screen, but the referee did not change his decision.
Australian all-rounder Tim David was heard saying “this is ridiculous” following the umpire’s decision.
“No umpire shall call out a batsman, although he may be out under the Laws, unless appealed by a fielder. This shall not prevent a batsman who is out under any of the Laws from leaving the wicket without an appeal having taken place. “However, take into account the provisions of article 31.7,” says the standard.
Coming into the match, batsman great Glenn Maxwell scored a 50-ball century as Australia beat the West Indies by 34 runs. The 35-year-old had a sinister touch, hitting eight sixes and 12 fours in an incredible 120 not out off 55 deliveries.
It propelled Australia to 241-4 and the visitors could only muster 207-9 in reply, led by captain Rovman Powell’s 63.
“It was a lot of fun, that’s for sure. The batting is always good here, we saw in the Big Bash how good the wickets were during the tournament,” Maxwell said.
“The wicket was nice and true. I’ve always relied on my hand speed and it worked for me today. I always give myself the best chance and it’s good to play a positive shot.”
The hosts won the first clash in Hobart by 11 runs, with one match left to play in Perth on Tuesday.
