A new report analyzes the disappointing box office performance of lady webshedding some light on why Sony’s Marvel movie didn’t captivate the world.

Before release, it seemed clear that the film was in trouble, as advance ticket sales were not very strong. An insider from an unnamed major movie theater chain reportedly discussed how many of the advance ticket sales could actually be seen declining in real time, as moviegoers requested refunds through Wednesday, the weekday opening day of lady web.

The film’s budget was said to be around $80 million, but THR’s new report claims it was actually over $100 million. With additional marketing costs, lady web looks to cost Sony a substantial amount of money, although things could have been worse. $100 million is certainly not a low budget, but it’s still half of what has typically been given to most other Marvel or DC comic book movies.
‘We Play’: Madame Web Almost Included a Post-Credits Scene, Director Reveals
Unlike many other superhero films, Madame Web broke tradition by including a post-credits scene, but that was not decided from the beginning.
As the theater chain’s source said, lady web did not equal Shazam! fury of the gods, which opened with $30.5 million domestically. The new film also sets the unfortunate record of being the lowest-grossing film based on Marvel Comics characters since its critical release. Fantastic four remake in 2015. That film grossed $26.2 million in the United States upon its release. Both films also failed to debut at No. 1, as lady web lost first place to a Bob Marley biopic, while Fantastic four could not dethrone Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation.
Madame Web’s reviews are not very strong
One reason that could explain some of the decline in advance ticket sales could be the poor reviews it received with its first reviews. The film was not a hit with critics and has since set a new low for Sony’s Spider-Man Universe by scoring below morbium. Its score is low, 13%, and although its audience score is much higher, 55%, that also marks SSU’s lowest audience score.
