The sad news that Toby Keith had passed away spread around the world yesterday (February 6), shocking millions of fans. In the wake of his followers learning of his death, his music has exploded in popularity, especially on iTunes. The country star’s catalog surged on the platform, and now he’s soared to No. 1.
Keith currently sits at No. 1 on iTunes’ U.S. chart with his single “Don’t Let the Old Man In.” The track replaces Tracy Chapman in first place on the purchase-only tally. She sent her decades-old hit “Fast Car” to the summit after performing it during the Grammys telecast with Luke Combs, who was nominated for his own rendition of the track.
Nearly every song of Keith’s that made it to the iTunes chart in the hours following the news of his death being made public has climbed since first arriving yesterday. The country star’s discography can be seen everywhere on the ranking, with many of his most beloved cuts rising toward the top of the list.
Currently, Keith claims six spaces inside the top 10 alone. He fills all of the following spots within the uppermost region on the important and competitive sales chart: “Should’ve Been a Cowboy” (No. 4), “As Good As I Once Was” (No. 6), “How Do You Like Me Now?!” (No. 7), “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American)” (No. 8), and “I Love This Bar” (No. 9).
The only songs that manage to find space inside the top 10 that aren’t by Keith all benefit from being featured during the Grammys this past Sunday (February 4). Chapman’s “Fast Car” drives back to No. 2, while Combs’ version is down slightly to No. 5. The newly-minted Record of the Year winner, Miley Cyrus’ “Flowers,” slips slightly to No. 3. Billy Joel’s comeback single “Turn the Lights Back On” backtracks as well, landing at No. 10.
Keith fills half of all the spaces inside the top 50 on the iTunes U.S. chart with a bevy of successful singles and fan favorites. Looking at the top 100, he occupies another 22 spots, giving him control over just under half of the entire ranking.
All these purchases will likely help Keith make a major impact on the Billboard charts next week. The superstar’s name will almost certainly appear all over a number of lists, such as the Hot Country Songs, Digital Song Sales, and of all the lists, the Country Digital Song Sales.
