Tom Holland stars in the West End revival of ‘Romeo and Juliet’

Tom Holland hangs up the spandex and takes on Shakespeare’s most famous doomed lover.

That’s right, the “Spider-Man: No Way Home” star will play Romeo this summer in London’s West End. The production of “Romeo and Juliet” probably won’t be like the stocking-heavy classic versions you’ve seen before. That’s because Jamie Lloyd, who applied his stripped-back, minimalist approach to dull classics like “Cyrano de Bergerac,” “The Seagull” and “A Doll’s House,” is overseeing the revival. They have also attracted major stars such as James McAvoy, Emilia Clarke, Tom Hiddleston and Jessica Chastain. “A Doll’s House” was nominated for several Tony Awards last year. Lloyd’s production is being billed as a “vibrant new vision of Shakespeare’s immortal story of wordsmiths, rhymes, lovers and fighters.”

Holland announced the news on social media. The limited run will run for 12 weeks and will begin showings in May. There’s no word yet on who will play Juliet alongside Holland, but the actor’s involvement means this is instantly a hot ticket.

Holland made his stage debut with the title role in “Billy Elliot: The Musical.” “Tom Holland is one of the greatest and most exciting young actors in the world,” Lloyd said in a statement. “It is an honor to welcome him back to the West End.”

In addition to his roles in Marvel films, Holland starred alongside Mark Wahlberg in the adventure film “Uncharted,” which was a box office success. She also headlined the gritty drama “Cherry” and the Southern Gothic story “The Devil All the Time.” Other film roles include “The Lost City of Z” and “In the Heart of the Sea.” Holland recently appeared in the Apple TV+ series “The Crowded Room.”
