The Royal Rumble is where a star’s dreams can come true in WWE, but this year, for the newly returned CM Punk, it was more of a nightmare. On Monday’s episode of “WWE Raw,” Punk announced that he suffered a triceps injury during the match and will miss WrestleMania 40. It was a passionate promo where Punk touched on the struggles of cancer patients, as well as those of other professionals. as teachers, and told the crowd, “There will always be next year.”
Tommy Dreamer and Thunder Rosa discussed the promotion and Punk’s injury on a recent episode of “Busted Open Radio.” Dreamer said that he thought Punk broke his triceps when he was eliminated from the match, although it was reported that Punk was injured receiving a Future Shock DDT from Drew McIntyre. Dreamer loved the promo and said Punk handled the announcement “perfectly.”
“His promo was amazing because it was real,” Dreamer said. “No one deserves to be hurt.”
Rosa said she knows Punk is hurt, sad and heartbroken, but she also believes Punk knows it’s not the end for him. She praised the star for her examples of those who struggle with things bigger than wrestling injuries, like her friend battling cancer. Dreamer added that Punk goes out and talks to fans from the heart whether they like it or not.
“If that was his plan, to make people feel empathy for what’s going on, I think he did an incredible job,” Rosa said. “Even if you hate CM Punk, there was a time when you felt some kind of empathy. You had to do it. If not, you’re a psychopath.”
