Ty Pennington is doing very well despite undergoing some personal makeovers.

in a new interview with Entertainment tonight, the HGTV host, 59, gave an update on his well-being after a health scare last summer. “I’m great,” he said. “You know the good thing is that if you almost die, you get a lot of attention. It feels so nice to be loved. I’m planning another one… No, I’m kidding!”

In July, Pennington was hospitalized just days after attending the Barbie premiere and underwent surgery to treat an abscess in the back of his throat. He shared more details of the events leading up to the surgery with Eastern Time.

“I had an abscess in my throat and I woke up unable to breathe,” Pennington recalled. “I drove down the mountain to the hospital and thought, ‘Hey, can you give me a steroid to help reduce the swelling?’ And (the doctor) says, ‘What if it’s more than that? What if you shut up and can’t breathe?’ I’m like, ‘Oh my God.’ He’s like, ‘I think we have to fly you to Denver.’ And I wake up and I have a tube down my throat.”

After the medical emergency, Pennington revealed some details on instagram along with a photo of him recovering in the hospital. “From the red carpet to the ICU… this last week has been interesting! I’m fine now, I’m still recovering,” he wrote, referring to his attendance at Los Angeles. Barbie premiere. “I had surgery on Wednesday and was discharged from the ICU yesterday afternoon… A great reminder to LISTEN to your body when it’s telling you something.”

Pennington is now back in full swing, hosting Rock the block, which premieres March 5 on HGTV. And that return to form is intentional after his experience.

“It made me realize that you don’t know when your time card is going to be taken away, so wake up and live each day to the fullest,” he said. “I mean that’s why the ’60s are going to be the time to start doing everything, and that’s what I love about being a part of these projects, because I think we all want to make sure that we’ve done things to be remembered for.”
