Tyler Perry’s planned $800 million studio expansion in Atlanta has been put on the back burner due to his growing concerns about developments in artificial intelligence.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter published Thursday, Perry expressed the need for the industry to anticipate the potential impact of AI, saying, “There has to be some type of regulation to protect us. If not, I just don’t see how we will survive.”
He went on to specifically cite OpenAI’s text-to-video conversion tool, Sora, as the impetus to stop the spread. “I’ve been looking very closely at AI and watching the advancements very closely. I was in the middle of, and I’ve been planning for the last four years, about an $800 million expansion at the studio, which would have increased the backlot by a tremendous size, we were adding 12 more sound stages. “All of that is currently and indefinitely on hold because of Sora and what I’m seeing.”

Perry clarified that he is not against AI and shared that he has used the technology in two of his upcoming films, opting to age in post-production rather than in a makeup chair.
While he recognized the potential for AI to aid filmmaking, allowing him to create scenarios with text rather than travel, he fears for the jobs that could be lost to automation. “I am very concerned about all the people in the business. Because as I watched it, I immediately started thinking about everyone in the industry that would be affected by this, including actors, grip, electrical, transportation, sound, and editors, and as I watch this, I think it will affect to all. corner of our industry,” he said.
