Tyne Daly leaves Broadway revival of Doubt; Amy Ryan taking over

Roundabout Theater Company’s revival of John Patrick Shanley’s play began previews on February 3.

Tyne Daly leaves Broadway revival of John Patrick Shanley’s play Doubt, which began previews on February 3 at the Todd Haimes Theatre. The revival canceled its first preview, originally scheduled for February 2, following an unexpected hospitalization of Daly, who was to lead the cast as Sister Aloysius. Daly was also away from the show over the weekend, with understudy Isabel Keating stepping in.

Tony and Oscar nominee Amy Ryan (Only murders in the building) will take on the role of Sister Aloysius starting February 13. Opening night, initially scheduled for February 29, was postponed until March 7.

“With respect and admiration for Tyne, we wish him the best and a speedy recovery,” Roundabout artistic director Scott Ellis, who is also directing the revival, says in a statement. “We are grateful that Amy Ryan said yes, in one short minute, to joining our company and taking on the role of Sister Aloysius. We deeply appreciate Isabel Keating, who remarkably stepped in with a day of rehearsal and allowed us to get the production. “Getting on your feet during this first week of performances.”

Set in an all-boys Catholic school in the Bronx, drama ensues when strict Sister Aloysius begins to suspect an inappropriate relationship between Father Flynn and a student. The cast features Liev Scheiber as Father Flynn, alongside Zoe Kazan as Sister James and Quincy Tyler Bernstine as Mrs. Muller. Completing the company are understudies Christiana Clark, Olivia Cygan, Isabel Keating and Chris McGarry. The casting is carried out by Jim Carnahan and Carrie Gardner.

Roundabout acting artistic director Scott Ellis directs the revival, the play’s first on Broadway.

Ryan has been nominated for two Tony Awards for her performances in A Streetcar Named Desire and Uncle Vanya—both Roundabout Theater Company productions. She won the Obie Award for her performance in Love love love and Mike Bartlett. Ryan recently starred alongside Joaquin Phoenix in Ari Aster’s film. The groom is afraid for the A24. Next, she will star alongside Colin Farrell in the Apple TV+ limited series, Sugar in April 2024, and alongside George Clooney and Brad Pitt in Wolveswhich will be released in theaters on September 20.

Shanley also received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The play received a film adaptation in 2008 starring Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams and Viola Davis, all receiving Academy Award nominations for their performances.

Ellis leads a creative team that includes scenic designer David Rockwell, lighting designer Kenneth Posner, costume designer Linda Cho, sound designer Mikaal Sulaiman, hair and wig designer Charles G. LaPointe and vocal coach Kate Wilson . Charles Means serves as production stage manager.
