England conceded quite quickly on the third day of the fifth Test against India in Dharamsala after the hosts took a big lead in the first innings. The famous Bazball technique came to nothing as Ben Stokes and Co. offered no resistance. India maintained the lead throughout with a 4-1 series victory in sight. The Indians also engaged in unpleasant sledding with English stars. The chat between the Indian and English batsmen was caught on a microphone.

One of the interactions that went viral was between Shubman Gill and Jonny Bairstow. It also involved Sarfaraz Khan and Dhruv Jurel.

This is how the conversation went:

Bairstow: What did you say to Jimmy about getting tired and he took you out after that?

Gill: So, it was after my 100, how many do you have here?

Sarfaraz – Thode runs kya bana diya, jyada uchal raha hain (he scored some runs today and jumped too much).

India took a huge lead of 259 runs in the first innings before Ravichandran Ashwin tore through England’s self-destructive top order to leave them reeling at 103 for five in their second innings at lunch on the third day of the fifth Test on Saturday. India could only add four runs to their overnight score to finish with 477 in reply to England’s 218.

It took the visitors less than 20 minutes to conclude India’s innings and veteran James Anderson finally reached the 700-wicket mark. Youngster Shoaib Bashir stumped Jasprit Bumrah for his second five-wicket haul of his debut series.

England’s second innings unfolded at a rather frenetic pace as the batsmen mainly resorted to attacking the Indian spinners in their bid to survive but failed once again.

England captain Ben Stokes (2) cut a sorry figure after falling to Ashwin on the stroke of lunch with a straighter one. England still need 157 runs for India to bat again, which seems highly unlikely.

As Rohit Sharma did not take the field due to back stiffness, Bumrah led the side in the middle besides opening the bowling alongside Ashwin.

Playing his 100th Test, Ashwin once again edged out England opener Ben Duckett (2). The left-hander, who had struggled to fend off Ashwin in the previous games, charged towards the wicket for a counter-attacking hit but was nowhere near the delivery of the ball, resulting in a dismissal.

Ashwin had a leg slip to Zak Crawley (0) with the pitch offering a good amount of spin and bounce. The England opener got an inside edge on the pads and it deflected straight into the hands of Sarfaraz Khan at leg slip. Ollie Pope (19), who is a tentative starter, was Ashwin’s third victim. It was again an error of judgment on the part of an England batsman as he attempted to boldly sweep a delivery that went straight to the arm and that too on the short side.

Jonny Baristow (39 off 31), who is also playing his 100th Test, joined Joe Root in the middle and went on the offensive from the start.

Playing off spin, Bairstow hit three thunderous sixes off Ashwin on the right side before being declared lbw off Kuldeep Yadav. It was another boom-and-bust hit that Bairstow played in the series.

He exchanged a few words with a posted Shubman Gill at first slip and lost concentration in the process. Root was stranded on 34 off 52 balls at the break.
