UP Sports Weekend Recap: Feb. 8-11

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) – It was a busy weekend in high school and college sports. Below you can find a breakdown of Friday Night Fever and the college basketball sweeps of both Northern Michigan and Michigan Tech.

High School Boys and Girls Basketball:

In a Friday night matchup between Ishpeming girls basketball and Negaunee, Jenna Maki opened the scoring and Kadie Kaukola followed with a basket of her own. However, Ella Mason came on to play for the Miners when she ran past Hematite defenders to score two points from the free throw line. Ella Mason is at it again with the rain buckets and earns a total of 30 points for the night. Negaunee ends the game handing Ishpeming its first loss of the season with a final score of 65-56. Both teams are now 16-1 on the season.

Another matchup between Negaunee and Ishpeming on Friday night for the men’s team. Gavin Saunders passes the ball to Baron Heslip, and he returns it to Saunders for a three-pointer, putting the Miners on top in the second quarter with a score of 19-7. The Hematites came close to matching the Miners in the third when Caden Luoma scored two. The Miners continue to lead in the fourth as Saunders makes more three-pointers from beyond the arc leading to a final score of 68-59 for a Negaunee sweep.

The Marquette Sentinels women’s team hosted the Kingsford Flivvers on Friday night in a close game. Flivver’s Addisyn Kriegl found the ball late in the first quarter and hit a three-pointer for a four-point lead at 6-2. Fast forward to the second quarter with the Sentinels in control of the ball for an Audree Blackburn jumper. The home team is still losing by four, but still has a chance to turn the score around. An expulsion from Alaina Kowalski to Anna Bortolini for a layup adds another two points to Flivver’s score. A similar cycle is done but this time Bortolini passes it to Kowalski for a triple from beyond the arc. Kingsford finds victory with six points at 40-34 and prepares to host Menominee on Monday night.

The Marquette Boys team hosted the St. Ignace Saints on Friday hoping to continue their 11-win streak. Midway through the first quarter, we see Jaxon Jurmu coming down the court for a jumper, but the Saints’ Jonny Ingalls breaks through the Sentinel defenders for his own two points. A bit of back and forth ensues between Trevor Visnaw and Ethan Mclean before the ball is returned to Visnaw’s hands and he is sent in for a three-pointer from the corner. After tying at 75 points and going to overtime, the Sentinels get their twelfth consecutive victory with 93-88. Marquette will host Houghton at home on Tuesday.

Men’s and Women’s College Basketball:

The Northern Michigan women’s basketball team took on the Parkside Rangers on Thursday. Makaylee Kuhn led the ‘Cats with 25 points and 10 rebounds. Kuhn and Jacy Weisbrod each put 10 points on the board in the second quarter before going into halftime with a one-point lead, 34-33. 21 The team found its second consecutive victory against the Rangers by 71-60. The ‘Cats came to Berry on Saturday once again for a contest against Purdue Northwest. After a tie at 30 apiece before halftime, the home team made its name known with Kuhn scoring 20 points and Weisbrod with 15 to finish the score at 73-62. They now have a 15-7 overall record and 9-4 in the GLIAC as they prepare for a contest at Michigan Tech on Feb. 17 at 1 p.m.

The Northern Michigan men’s basketball team returned to the court with a vengeance after losing its last game to Lake Superior State and tying the program’s winning streak at 13 games. It was a head-to-head contest against the Rangers with the Wildcats pulling ahead a bit after the first half. Dylan Kuehl and Max Weisbrod scored 17 total points to win the conference 81-67. Saturday saw another close game between the ‘Cats and Purdue Northwest Pride. The visiting team led 66-61 with two minutes left in the game before Weisbrod found an opportunity for a 3-pointer and a series of free throws from Kuehl pushed them past the Pride for a 69-66 victory. The Wildcats are ranked 16th nationally with a 19-6 overall record and 12-1 in the conference. They prepare for a contest at Michigan Tech on February 17 at 3 p.m.

Michigan Tech’s basketball teams had similar matchups this weekend, as they hosted Purdue Northwest on Thursday and Parkside on Saturday. The women’s team recorded a small victory against the Pride on Thursday by seven points (67-60). Isabella Lenz led the Huskies with a total of 15 points, while Sara Dax was close behind with nine. As for her match against Parkside, Emma Anderson was able to record a career-high 14 points on Saturday afternoon to help take the 74-68 victory. The Huskies are now 12-9 overall and 7-6 in the GLIAC.

The Michigan Tech men’s basketball team also recorded a career-high this weekend with Dan Gherezgher reaching a game-high 26 points, along with 10 rebounds for a double-double that contributed to a 77-61 victory against the Pride. A weekend sweep was made after the team won its matchup against the Parkside Rangers on Saturday 74-52. Marcus Tomashek led the scoring department with 22 and recorded a team-high four assists. The team now advances with an 8-10 overall record and a 5-8 conference record.

College Hockey:

It was a tough weekend for the Northern Michigan University hockey team after falling 4-2 to the Bemidji State Beavers on Friday night. Goals by Kevin Marx Noren and Grant Slukynsky in the second half. The Beavers scored three goals back-to-back before earning a fourth point on a power play with six minutes left in the fourth period. Saturday night started to look up for the Wildcats, but they ended regulation with a three-point tie. No points were scored in overtime, leading the teams to a shootout where Bemidji State found the CCHA extra point. The Wildcats have a 9-14-5 overall record and 7-10-3 in the CCHA as they prepare to take on Ferris State in Big Rapids on Feb. 23-24.

The Michigan Tech Hockey team hit the ground running this weekend against the Minnesota State Mavericks for the annual Winter Carnival. Ryland Mosley opened the scoring just one minute into the game and scored the only goal of the first half. The Mavs caught up in the second period, but it didn’t last long before Nick Williams passed the puck to Logan Pietila for another point. With nine seconds left in the game, Jed Pietila scored his first goal of the season into the empty net to end the night with a 3-1 victory. The second night was a different story, as the Mavericks found an early lead midway through the first period. The Huskies matched their opponent’s efforts with a goal from Tyler Brontë. Fast forward to the second period for a pair of goals made by Minnesota State and they took a 3-1 lead. With three seconds left in the game, Mav’s Kaden Bohlsen scored an empty-net goal and split the weekend with a final score of 4-2. The Huskies will have a weekend off before heading to Ohio to take on Bowling Green State University in a two-day contest Feb. 23-24.

Women’s College Lacrosse:

It was an exciting start to the weekend for the NMU Women’s Lacrosse team at the Superior Dome. Minnie Bittell recorded her 150th career goal this season in the first 10 minutes of the game against Aquinas College. She proceeded to score five more goals to contribute to freshman Josie Lakosky’s three and Kaitlyn Bridger’s lone goal. The Wildcats finished the game with a 21-point victory (24-5).
