Operation Valentine’s Day movie review

Telugu360 Rating 2.5/5

Films made on patriotism will have a wide reach and connect with all sections of the audience if presented in the right way. These types of genre films are less abundant in southern and Telugu cinema. Adivi Sesh attempted Major and the result was positive. Now, Varun Tej is trying his luck with Operation Valentine, a film based on the deadly Pulwama attacks in Kashmir. Operation Valentine also marks Varun’s debut in Hindi. Made on a huge budget, Operation Valentine hits the screens in Telugu and Hindi languages. Here is the review of the movie:

History:

Operation Valentine is the story of Arjun alias Rudra (Varun Tej), who works as a Wing Commander in the Indian Air Force. He is an expert in testing fighter aircraft. He also has a bitter past. Operation Valentine has to do with the Pulwama attack that took place in 2019 and is the revenge plot of the Indian Air Force. The film narrates about Rudra’s contribution in the operation as Wing Commander and Ahna Gill (Manushi Chillar). Watch Operation Valentine to see how it happens.

Analysis:

It takes guts to make a film on real-life incidents. The public will know the facts very well through various media and narrating them with cinematic freedoms would be a brave task. These types of films need an emotional connection and realistic narration. Although Valentine’s Day has the necessary thrills, the film lacks an interesting and realistic narrative. The entire nation is aware of the Pulwama attacks, but the film lacks a gripping presentation. The love story lacks interest and the chemistry between the main actors will not connect well with the audience.

Rudra’s role has a bitter past and the episode goes on for too long. Although Rudra remembers her past, the episode does not connect with the audience. From the beginning, Operation Valentine runs flat and the audience never manages to connect. The aerial action sequence during the interval episode is well designed and well presented. Rudra is on a fighter plane in the sky when the Pulwama attack happens. The real story begins after Rudra and his team devise a revenge plan for the Pulwama attack.

The entire second half of Operation Valentine takes place in the air. The Indian Air Force’s attack on Pakistani fields is well shown. But the other episodes create a lot of confusion among the audience. Radar Display episodes sound like a video game in the sky. The audience is left really confused about what happens in the second half. Operation Valentine seems like a never-ending battle in the sky. Rudra’s role and her character are elevated too much and this will not attract the audience. This would be good for an action movie, but not for a movie inspired by real-life incidents.

Performances:

Varun Tej fits well into Rudra’s role as the commander of the Indian Air Force. His body language suits the role well and the actor plays him perfectly. Varun Tej gave a thrilling look during the second half because he had to wear a mask in the fighter jet. Manushi Chillar’s role has enough screen presence but there was no scope for her to act. There are many supporting actors but their roles had limited prominence.

Valentine is a technically good film. The production values are restrained and the artwork should have been better. The weak VFX work is clearly visible in most parts. Mickey J Meyer’s background music is decent and the songs won’t be recorded. The dialogues are good. The director has done enough research for the film, but it was his pale presentation and narration that makes Valentine a disappointment. The technical terminology of the Indian Air Force is overused and this will not appeal to many. The director must think from the audience’s perspective when presenting an episode so that the emotions work for each audience. The director failed in this regard in Operation Valentine.

Movies like Valentine must have emotion, patriotism, action and other aspects in the right amount to impress the audience. This does not happen with Operation Valentine and is a disappointing attempt.
