India defeated England in three days in the fifth and final Test, winning by an innings and 64 runs at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala on Saturday. The hosts were bowled out for 477 at the start of Day 3, but the damage had already been done. England had a 259-run deficit in front of them and the visitors suffered a crushing defeat moments before scheduled tea time. Ravichandran Ashwin claimed his 36th five-wicket haul as England were bowled out for 195.

India took the field without captain Rohit Sharma on Day 3. He did not take the field due to back stiffness, and pacer Jasprit Bumrah took charge as team captain.

Despite the absence of Rohit, there was no lack of aggressiveness from the Indian players. One of the incidents that went viral was Jonny Bairstow’s dispute with Shubman Gill and Sarfaraz Khan.

Gill and Sarfaraz were seen sledding in Bairstow. Reacting to the incident, former India opener Wasim Jaffer shared a funny post, which specially mentioned Virat Kohli.

Meanwhile, BCCI president Jay Shah announced an incentive of Rs 45 lakh per match for all those who played 75 per cent or more of the scheduled red-ball matches in a given season.

A Test player, who appears in a possible 10 Tests in a season, will be richer with a whopping Rs 4.5 crore as incentive, in addition to possible Rs 1.5 crore (15 lakh per game) in the usual fee of the party.

Top cricketers also get a guaranteed retainer fee in their annual central contracts.

“I am pleased to announce the initiation of ‘Test Cricket Incentive Programme’ for senior men, a step aimed at providing financial growth and stability to our esteemed athletes,” Shah said in ‘X’.

“Starting from the 2022-23 season, the ‘Test Cricket Incentive Scheme’ will serve as an additional reward structure in addition to the existing match fee for Test matches, fixed at Rs 15 lakh,” it further stated.

The incentives will be retrospective and will take into account players who were part of Test cricket during the 2022-23 season.
