Ahead of Lifetime’s upcoming documentary, “Where’s Wendy Williams?” Wendy Williams’ niece Alex Finnie opens up in a new interview with “Good Morning America” and shares why her aunt says she chooses to tell her story now.

When asked about criticism before the documentary’s release that the film could be exploiting Williams, Finnie told ABC News’ Deborah Roberts that Williams says he sees it as a way of appropriating his own story.

“I understand that people will see it and… some people will see it and think that,” said Finnie, who also appears in the documentary. “But I will say this, first and foremost, my aunt is the executive producer of this documentary.”

“And when I finally talked to her and said, ‘Aunt Wendy, why do you want to do this?’ You know, ‘you’re… you’re… clearly you’re… the health issue, all of that has to be addressed. Is now the right time?’ And she said, ‘Now is the perfect time because I want to take charge of my story,'” Finnie added.
