The International Football Association Board (IFAB) will announce the introduction of the first new card in the sport since the 1970 World Cup. The game’s lawmakers will reportedly confirm the introduction of the “blue card” on Friday.

The cards have already been used in trials this season in Wales. It comes after a warning from IFAB leaders that poor player behavior “could be the cancer that kills football”.

The Telegraph writes that the blue card will not be tested in “top-level competitions”, but elite tests could take place as early as the summer. It is said that the FA Cup and Women’s FA Cup could be used.

What is the blue card?

The card will be used to issue a sin-bin to offending players. This is itself a new addition to the game, although it has been used locally and in other countries around the world.

Sin-bins will last 10 minutes. The new reforms will not be in force for the European Championship in Germany during the summer or for the new Champions League season from 2024/25.

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin explained that he is totally against the blue card. “It’s not football anymore,” he said last month.
