Pop icon Taylor Swift became the latest target of deepfakes when her AI-generated sexually explicit images flooded social media platform X this week. The deepfakes, which racked up millions of views, became a source of protest as politicians and tech CEOs criticized the development.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella was among those who called the images “alarming and horrific” and said, “I think it’s incumbent upon us to act quickly on this.” The case raises concerns about online safety and the ethical implications of artificial intelligence technology.

This is what Nadella said in an interview with NBC

I would say two things: One, I go back again to what I think is our responsibility, which is all the barriers that we need to put around technology so that more safe content is produced. And there is a lot to do and a lot to do there. But it is a global and social issue; you know, I’ll say, of convergence on certain norms. And we can do it, especially when we have the law, law enforcement, and technology platforms that can come together. I think we can govern much more than we think, for which we give ourselves credit.

Nadella’s comments are important in this case because reports suggest that the images originated from a Telegram channel known for sharing AI-generated pornography. According to a report from 404 Media, these AI-generated sexually explicit images of Taylor Swift were created by one tool: Microsoft’s free AI text-to-image generator.

While AI tools refuse to create such images, several studies and research in the past have shown that these AI tools can be “tricked” into producing such images if the person using them enters relatively modified prompts.

Meanwhile, Taylor Swift fans and politicians, including the White House, expressed outrage over fake AI-generated pornographic images of the pop star. An image of the American megastar was viewed 47 million times on X, according to a report.
