Redd, a restaurant in Rochester, earned major praise from USA TODAY for its unique new American fare.
Since opening in 2019, Redd’s has become a go-to restaurant for special nights in Rochester. This week, it made national news: Along with 46 other restaurants, Redd’s was named to USA TODAY’s 2024 Restaurants of the Year list.
What makes Redd stand out?
Richard Reddington worked in some of the best kitchens in the world before opening his eponymous restaurants Redd and Redd Wood in Napa Valley. Redd received 7 Michelin stars from 2008 to 2014.
In 2019, he and business partner Dennis Wilmot opened a second version of Redd’s in their native Rochester.
Since then, Redd’s has become a go-to place for celebratory dinners. The menu, which changes seasonally, is inspired by all over the world. Regular signature dishes include lobster risotto with preserved lemon and watercress and pork belly with applesauce and soy caramel.
But Redd’s is also a great gathering place for drinks at the bar, which can be enjoyed with the most unique versions of pizza and wings in town.
The old brick building, once home to a horse-drawn ambulance company, is spacious and comfortable, decorated in earth tones and accented by a mural reminiscent of the nearby Finger Lakes. The acoustics are tuned to have an energetic hum, but you can still carry on a conversation. During the summer, the outdoor space, surrounded by planters full of plants, is magical.
Unless you’re visiting the bar, it’s a good idea to make reservations.
What to order at Redd
Wood-fired pizza. Try the wood-fired tomato pizza with garlic, oregano, chili flakes and no cheese. It is surprisingly tasty for its simplicity.
At. Extra crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, they’re topped with a sticky Thai chili glaze that’s just spicy enough.
Seafood. Dishes change seasonally, but their varied approaches to seafood are always good.
Desserts. Save space because they are always sublime.
